The values of 106 Miles are Reputation, Innovation, Solidarity, and Education.

We began in 2005 with a handful of technical founders and mission to educate entrepreneurial engineers through conversations.

We've been thinking lately about what 106 Miles is and the best way we can grow.

106 Miles is about sharing information and experiences, entrepreneur to entrepreneur.

We intend to grow 106 Miles by spreading our core values:
  • Reputation. Sharing experiences.
  • Innovation. Changing the world by employing a combination of creativity and technology.
  • Solidarity. By entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs.
  • Education. Sharing information.

106miles3

As 106 Miles grows out of Silicon Valley, we have come to realize how important entrepreneurship is to the world.

We aim to spread the values of Reputation, Innovation, Solidarity, and Education to the best entrepreneurs everywhere.

We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Hit it!

Fall festivities

We've had a bit of rain these past few days, helping to serve as reminder to us all from Mother Nature that summer's bidding us adieu. Fall has always been been among my favorite seasons, maybe because of how much color is on display. It reminds me a little of natural fireworks, and as fireworks fill us with awe I find it awesome that there are so many holidays grouped together in the fall.

Personally, any excuse to get together with friends and family is cause for celebration. Few things being people closer together than food, and with that in mind I'm glad to annouce that next week's get-together at The Underground in Redwood City will have light food and desserts provided to us by our good friend, d.a.wiseowl.

To RSVP for this event, please click here. See you there!

Footloose and Fancy-Free

Hi 106ers,

I wanted to let you know about two programs that may be beneficial for you, if you find yourself close to either Redwood City or Stanford.

The World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA), is forming a new Redwood City league which will kick-off in early October. Games will be held Saturday afternoons and will be followed by socializing and drink specials at our favorite bar in Redwood City, The RWC Underground Pub. WAKA has leagues all around the world and is one of the fastest growing co-ed social sports leagues around.

You can sign up solo or with a group of friends. Groups are merged together to form final teams. Each season is about 2 months long, with seven games, amazing parties, and a fabulous charity event. It's a great way to make new friends, network, and just get out and run around like a kid!

So, if you're over 21 and looking for a fun new activity, check it out! You can sign up by clicking here.

Are you interested in gaining more exposure to the business fundamentals and skills you need to move your innovative ideas forward? If so, we think you will be interested in the Stanford Graduate School of Business Program in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PRIE).

PRIE is a part-time evening academic program that provides participants exposure to both core business skills and the practical aspects of identifying, evaluating, and advancing business ideas. The program uniquely combines non-business Stanford graduate students and Silicon Valley professionals with backgrounds in science, technology, medicine, and engineering. PRIE gives rising innovators and entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn from premier GSB faculty and work with a diverse and talented group of classmates interested in formulating and developing innovative ideas.

Dates: January 15 through March 22, 2012
Class Schedule: two evenings per week and every other Saturday
Applications: Available online here (PS - if you apply please mention you heard about the program from 106 Miles!)
Admissions: Rolling admissions; applicants are encouraged to submit all materials by October 15, 2011
Eligibility: Bay Area Professionals with a minimum of a B.S. or B.A. (advanced degree preferred; candidates must NOT have an MBA)
To hear from PRIE Participants, click here! If you have questions about the PRIE Program, please click here!

P.S. - Those of you who've attended our events with food know that we are able to do so because companies like Orrick have collaborated with us to sponsor our events. We provide different sponsorship packages, so if you would be interested in sponsoring a 106 Miles event in the future, please contact us!

Cheers,
Liz

FAQs about 106 Miles in SoCal

We threw our first successful 106 Miles in Los Angeles at Nobu on Friday, August 12, 2011.

106 people attended from many walks of life to have a good time and conversations about startups, software engineering, and entrepreneurship.

Net-net, we concluded that there's a lot of demand for 106 Miles in Southern California.

So we've created a 106 Miles SoCal meetup group that is open to anyone who wants announcements of future 106 Miles events in Southern California.

We plan on having at least one event in southern California each month going forward.

Yes, we're all on the same team. All 106 Miles events are open to anyone who believes in startups and in our mission of educating entrepreneurial engineers.

Some September News (and silliness, too!)

We've reached September, and I've got not one, but two exciting announcements for you!

The first is that our Wednesday's meet-up in Redwood City on September 14 will have pizza! Pizza from Pizza and Pipes will be provided thanks to a generous sponsorship from Orrick

Rumor has it that we'll have desserts, too, so you should definitely plan to stop by.

To RSVP for this meetup, please click here.

Also, just to be silly and to have some fun, we're asking everyone to wear a hat. It's September, and about time to have some silliness. Hopefully we'll see you there!

The second bit of news is we've officially expanded and now have a 106 Miles meet-up group in SoCal. So all of you who call the sometimes sunnier half of California home (or just find it a fun place to roam) ought to join this group, which you can do by clicking here!

The wonderful Sasha will be the official head of 106 Miles in Southern California, congratulations Sasha! FYI, the next 106 Miles in SoCal will be on September 16 at Tiato in Santa Monica, so if you're free you should RSVP by clicking here.

P.S. - Those of you who've attended our events with food know that we are able to do so because companies like Orrick have collaborated with us to sponsor our events. We provide different sponsorship packages, so if you would be interested in sponsoring a 106 Miles event in the future, please contact us!

Cheers,

Liz
